Spotty duck is home to Spotty Duck wood ‘n things, a small family run business based on the Northumberland/Cumbria border.  Specialising in wooden toys, jewellery, boxes and household items as well as hand crafted applique cushions and pictures.

Spotty Duck wood ‘n things all started with an old wooden toy horse that my grandfather made for my father when he was a boy, this was passed on to me when I was a little (horse obsessed) girl and in turn was played with by my boys.  But the old horse had had a very hard life, he had travelled to the other side of the world and back, been played with by countless pairs of small hands over the last 60 years and put up a brave fight against the teeth of many mischievous puppies.  He was starting to look a little battered and feel his age.  So I decided to make a new one, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A few years after I started making wooden toys for my boys my sister got married and I (being ever over ambitious) decided I was going to make them a quilt as a wedding present.  I didn’t have a sewing machine at the time but it was fine I would make them one by hand, a king size quilt, by hand.  It got finished (only a little late) and I caught the sewing bug, but I came to my senses and bought a sewing machine.  Following set patterns wasn’t for me so I played and in playing learnt that by using a combination of piecing, applique, freemotion embroidery and hand embroidery I could create something unique.
